Areas We Serve: Motorcycle Crashes in San Antonio, Bexar County and Nearby Cities

This page is from LAWBOSS – Uvalle Law Firm, PLLC, the firm behind Motorcycle Lawyer San Antonio. Our San Antonio office is in Fountainhead Tower on I-10, and we take motorcycle cases from across Bexar County and the cities around it. Where a crash happens matters in a claim: it decides which police agency writes the report, which roads and conditions the evidence has to explain, and which county the case would be filed in under Civil Practice and Remedies Code Section 15.002, which generally sends a suit to the county where the events happened.

San Antonio and Bexar County

TxDOT’s 2025 county table lists 46,744 crashes in Bexar County, with 190 people killed and 759 with suspected serious injuries, counting every kind of vehicle. Within the City of San Antonio it lists 167 people killed. Most crashes in the city are worked by the San Antonio Police Department; outside the city limits the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office or a town’s own police may respond, and DPS troopers work many highway crashes. A suit over a Bexar County crash generally goes to the civil district courts of Bexar County.

  • Loop 410 and Loop 1604. Lane changes and merges from the access roads, at speed.
  • I-10 and I-35. Heavy traffic, construction zones and backups at the interchanges, where riders are hit from behind.
  • US 281 and I-37. The north-south routes through downtown, with their own merges and exits.
  • Arterials such as Bandera Road, Culebra Road and Fredericksburg Road. Left turns and drivers pulling out of shopping centres.

Serious injuries in the area are taken to University Hospital on Medical Drive or Brooke Army Medical Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, the two Level I trauma centres. Our page on rider injuries has more.

Leon Valley and Helotes

Both cities sit in Bexar County on the northwest side. Bandera Road, State Highway 16, runs through Leon Valley past shopping centres with turning traffic at nearly every driveway, then on through Helotes, where it becomes the ride toward Bandera and the Hill Country. Loop 410 and Loop 1604 cross it. Leon Valley and Helotes each have their own police departments, so a crash inside either city is usually reported by that department rather than SAPD.

Live Oak, Converse and Universal City

These Bexar County cities lie along I-35 and Loop 1604 on the northeast side, around Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph. FM 78 runs through Converse toward Schertz. Riders here face freeway merges on I-35 and Loop 1604 and the turning traffic of the commercial roads off them. A crash in any of these cities is generally a Bexar County case.

Schertz

Schertz spreads across parts of Guadalupe, Comal and Bexar Counties along I-35 and FM 78. Which county a crash happened in can decide where a suit would be filed, so the exact location on the crash report matters. The Schertz Police Department responds inside the city.

New Braunfels

New Braunfels lies along I-35 between San Antonio and Austin, mostly in Comal County. It is also where many San Antonio riders head on weekends: FM 306 runs northwest toward Canyon Lake, and River Road follows the Guadalupe River. Those two-lane roads bring curves, gravel washed onto the pavement after rain, and heavy traffic on summer weekends. A crash in Comal County would generally be filed in Comal County.

Boerne

Boerne is the county seat of Kendall County, northwest of San Antonio on I-10. State Highway 46 crosses it toward New Braunfels, and the roads west of town lead into the Hill Country. Riders coming home on I-10 meet merging traffic and long downhill stretches. A crash in Kendall County would generally be filed there.

Seguin

Seguin is the county seat of Guadalupe County, east of San Antonio on I-10, with State Highway 123 running north and south through the city. Highway crashes here may be worked by DPS, and crashes inside the city by the Seguin Police Department. A Guadalupe County crash would generally be filed in Guadalupe County.

The Hill Country roads riders love

The weekend rides out of San Antonio go west on Bandera Road, north on US 281, or out to Ranch Roads 335, 336 and 337 around Leakey and Vanderpool, which riders call the Twisted Sisters. Rider Magazine calls them the Texas Hill Country’s most famous trio, and its ride report warns of quick turns, whitetail deer and cattle on unfenced stretches of road. Those roads are a long way from a trauma centre. A crash there may be investigated by DPS or a county sheriff and belongs to that county’s courts. We take those cases too.

Wherever the crash happened, the report reaches TxDOT, and our page on what to do after a motorcycle wreck explains how to get it. For how fault is decided on any of these roads, see who is at fault in a motorcycle crash.
